Divers found this small pink and yellow fish in 2016, deep in the reefs of Papahānaumokuākea, a vast protected stretch of ocean northwest of Hawaii. As far as anyone can tell, it lives there and absolutely nowhere else on Earth. Richard Pyle, the diver who spotted it, said the team picked the name to thank Obama for his ocean work, since he had just made that protected stretch far bigger. There is a bonus joke hiding in it, too. The male has a spot on his back fin that looks an awful lot like Obama's old campaign logo.

This one is a parasite — a flat worm thinner than a human hair, living inside the lungs of freshwater turtles in Malaysia. Naming something like that after a person sounds like an insult, but Thomas Platt, the scientist who did it, meant the exact opposite. He told the Associated Press it was "clearly something in my small way done to honor our president," and described the worm admiringly as long, thin and very cool. Then there is the twist. Platt turns out to be Obama's fifth cousin, twice removed.

This spider digs a burrow out of silk and dirt, roofs it with a hidden lid, and waits underneath for something to wander past — then flips the door open and grabs it. Jason Bond named it in 2012, one of thirty-three new spiders he described in a single go. His reasoning, as he told Wired: "I feel like his presidency is noteworthy."

Obamadon means "Obama's teeth." Yale scientists were taking a second look at some old fossils when they realized one of them belonged to an animal nobody had ever named. It was a bug-eating lizard, less than a foot long, with strikingly tall, straight teeth. Nicholas Longrich, who led the study, put it plainly. "The lizard has these very tall, straight teeth and Obama has these tall, straight incisors and a great smile." It died out around 65 million years ago, taken by the same asteroid that finished the dinosaurs.
