He earned his bachelor’s degree in English and Classical Civilzations in 1993 before going on to earn a master’s degree in English from Trinity Collegein Hartford, CT. While still a student, he also worked as a Graduate Fellow and coached football for the university’s athletic department.
For his role in the Pro Bowl careers of numerous players such as Terrell Suggsand Kyle Juszczyk, he was named as one of the most powerful people in sports under the age of 35 in 2006 by Sporting News. They would later also name him NFL Executive of the Year in May 2020.

On February 2, 2018, the Ravens officially announced that DeCosta would take over as General Manager for Ozzie Newsome following the 2018 season.
