Arthur Buchwald was an American humorist best known for his column in The Washington Post. In November 1952, Buchwald wrote a column to amuse his linguistically sophisticated readers in retelling the story of the first Thanksgiving using false cognates such as "Merci Donnant" for Thanksgiving; Buchwald considered it his favorite column.
