Jhr. Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold was a German physician, botanist and traveller. He achieved prominence by his studies of Japanese flora and fauna. He was the father of the first female Japanese doctor educated in Western medicine, Kusumoto Ine. Von Siebold is credited with the introduction of vaccination and pathological anatomy for the first time in Japan. Philipp Franz von Siebold became a physician by earning his M.D. degree in 1820.
