About Oscar Zariski

Oscar Zariski was an American mathematician. The Russian-born scientist was one of the most influential algebraic geometers of the 20th century. Zariski proposed the first example of a Zariski surface in 1958. Zariski was awarded Cole Prize in 1944, the Steele Prize in 1981, and the Wolf Prize in Mathematics with Lars Ahlfors in 1981. After spending a year 1946–1947 at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, Zariski became professor at Harvard University in 1947 where he remained until his retirement in 1969.
