About John Lewis (pianist)

John Aaron Lewis was an American jazz pianist, composer and arranger, best known as the founder and musical director of the Modern Jazz Quartet. It is commonly thought that "John Lewis, for reasons of his contributions to the band, was apparently the first among the equals". Lewis was also able to travel to Japan, where CBS commissioned his first solo piano album. In 1989, Lewis was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music.
