In 1880, Muldoon gained recognition when he won the World Greco-Roman Heavyweight Championship with a win over title claimant Thiebaud Bauer. Sullivan won and Muldoon gained national notice for restoring the boxing champion to fighting form. The two would later have a three-round bout where Muldoon would lose the first but win the next two.
