About Mark Lawrenson

Mark Thomas Lawrenson is a former professional footballer who played as a defender. He is best known for his time at Liverpool, during the 1980s. After a short career as a manager, he then became a radio, television and internet pundit, most prominently with the BBC, until his retirement in 2022. Born and raised in England, Lawrenson qualified to play for the Republic of Ireland through his grandfather, Thomas Crotty, who was born in Waterford. Ironically, the then Second Division side outbid First Division Liverpool who also showed interest in the 19-year-old Lawrenson. Liverpool offered a club transfer record of £900,000, and Lawrenson joined in the summer of 1981.
