About Ernst Chain

Sir Ernst Boris Chain was a German-born British biochemist. He shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Alexander Fleming and Howard Florey "for the discovery of penicillin and its curative effect in various infectious diseases". Chain and Florey discovered how to isolate and concentrate the germ-killing agent in penicillin. Chain was an ardent Zionist and he became a member of the board of governors of the Weizmann Institute of Science at Rehovot in 1954, and later a member of the executive council.
