About Uwe Boll

Uwe Boll (German: [ˈuːvə ˈbɔl]; born 22 June 1965) is a German filmmaker. He has directed more than 30 films during a four-decade career, coming to prominence for his adaptations of video games. Beginning his career in Germany in 1991, Boll transitioned to English-language films during the 2000s. Boll's first major release was the 2003 adaptation of House of the Dead, which was followed by film versions of Alone in the Dark, Bloodrayne, In the Name of the King, and Postal between 2005 and 2007. His adaptations were critical and commercial failures, with Alone in the Dark considered one of the worst films ever made. Boll's later films were released direct-to-video to mostly negative reviews, although some such as 2009's Rampage and Darfur were better received. After retiring in 2016 to become a restaurateur, Boll returned to filmmaking in 2020. He gained renewed attention in 2026 for his action thriller Citizen Vigilante after it was refused an age certification in Germany and subsequently promoted by Elon Musk on X. == Early life == Boll was born in Wermelskirchen, West Germany. At ten years old he decided to become a director after seeing Mutiny on the Bounty. After graduating from high school, he unsuccessfully applied to several film schools.
