About Antoinette Perry

Mary Antoinette "Tony" Perry was an American actress, producer, director and administrator, known for her work in theatre, she was co-founder and secretary of the American Theatre Wing and is the namesake of the Tony Awards, presented by that organization for excellence in Broadway theatre. In 1906 David Warfield discovered her, and she remained with his company as leading lady until 1909. According to Ellis Nassour: Perry became a stage director at a time when women working offstage in the theater were often relegated to positions as costumers or dressers.
