Edward John Eyre was an English land explorer of the Australian continent, colonial administrator, Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand's New Munster province, and Governor of Jamaica. The northernmost point of the first expedition was Mount Eyre; it was named by Governor Gawler on 11 July 1839. Those events created great controversy in England and resulted in demands for Eyre to be arrested and tried for murdering Gordon.
