About Kenneth Calman

Sir Kenneth Charles Calman (25 December 1941 – 21 July 2025) was a Scottish doctor and academic who worked as a surgeon, oncologist and cancer researcher, and held the position of Chief Medical Officer of Scotland, and then England. He was Warden and Vice-Chancellor of Durham University from 1998 to 2006 before becoming Chancellor of the University of Glasgow. He held the position of Chair of the National Cancer Research Institute from 2008 until 2011. Kenneth Calman was born on 25 December 1941 to Grace Douglas Don and Arthur McIntosh Calman. From 2008 to 2009, he was convener of the Calman Commission on Scottish devolution. Calman became Hall Fellow and lecturer in surgery at the University of Glasgow in 1969, and between 1972 and 1974, was a clinical research fellow at the Chester Beatty Research Institute in London.
