About Orson Pratt
Orson Pratt Sr. was an American religious leader and mathematician who was an original member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Christ. After the succession crisis Pratt continued in the Quorum of the Twelve of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a leading Mormon theologian and writer until his death. Pratt was ordained an Elder several months later, on December 1, 1830, by Joseph Smith and immediately set out for Colesville, New York, his first mission. This was the first of a number of short missions in which Pratt visited New York, Ohio, Missouri, and the Eastern States. A few examples of conflicts with Young include opposition by Pratt to reestablishing a First Presidency in 1847, the legalization of slavery in Utah Territory in 1852, and Young's Adam-God teachings. In 1865, Pratt was one of the first Mormon missionaries to work in Austria.
